Out on the Intracoastal Waterway in New Smyrna Beach, people work up an appetite. Whether they're sailing, jet-skiing, kayaking or pleasure boating, everyone gets hungry when on the river. That's where what I think is a unique cafe comes into play. In business since 1991, Donna McKee Athearn has a floating restaurant, the South of the Mouth Cafe, that operates on the Waterway during the weekend. She's usually near Marker 35 across from Chicken Island. Boaters pull up to her boat, tie off and place their orders. The South of the Mouth has a rather limited but good menu offering such staples as chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, meatball subs and ice cream. Prices are moderate. South of the Mouth is in operation during the spring and summer every Saturday and Sunday through September from about 7:30 am until 6 pm. We can also cater your Soup and Salad luncheon and provide a humorous local author and encouragement speaker for the event.
